Multiple suicide bombers struck the heart of Maiduguri, Borno State on Monday evening in one of the deadliest attacks on the city in recent years. The blasts hit the busy Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, the Post Office area in the city centre, and the eastern neighbourhood of Kaleri. Police confirmed 23 deaths and 108 injuries, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of chaos — bodies on pavements outside the hospital, volunteers issuing urgent blood donation calls, and families frantically searching for relatives. No group immediately claimed responsibility, but security analysts and the Borno State Governor pointed to Boko Haram/ISWAP. The attack broke a years-long relative calm in Maiduguri, the last major strike on the city centre having been in 2021. President Tinubu — who departed for the UK the same morning — condemned the attack as terrorism and directed all security chiefs to travel to Maiduguri. The Nigerian military said ISWAP had been signalling an escalation in attacks during the final days of Ramadan. MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) confirmed it was supporting overwhelmed hospitals in the city.

President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at approximately 10:00am Tuesday for a state visit to the United Kingdom — the first by a Nigerian president in 37 years. Tinubu becomes the first Nigerian leader ever hosted at Windsor Castle, with the four previous Nigerian state visit guests received at Buckingham Palace. Formal proceedings begin Wednesday 18 March, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The schedule includes a private audience and state banquet at Windsor Castle, bilateral talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, signing of multiple MoUs on trade, defence, immigration and cultural cooperation, and Tinubu’s attendance at a Nigerian Modernism exhibition. The centrepiece economic deal is the signing of a landmark £746 million UK Export Finance (UKEF) agreement with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for port refurbishment. A major business reception bringing together Nigerian and British investors is also confirmed.

Former Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his hometown of Agulu, Anaocha LGA, Anambra State, firing the starting gun on his 2027 presidential campaign. Obi announced plans to file a court challenge against the newly signed Electoral Act 2026, which he alleges was “hurriedly passed to manipulate the 2027 general elections.” He accused INEC of overstepping its constitutional role — saying the agency “should be a referee, not a team selector.” Obi declared the South-East is “working as a family” and in talks with other regions to unite all opposition: “The 2027 election will be Nigerians versus bad leadership.” He called on Anambra’s 2.8 million registered voters to mobilise, warning: “This time, we will catch them and count them out.” Senator Victor Umeh and other ADC lawmakers also formally registered at their wards.

A fresh round of groaning and outrage has swept across Nigeria after the Dangote Refinery again raised pump prices — hitting already stretched household budgets hard. Transport fares have spiked across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other major cities. The price hike is directly linked to the ongoing Iran-Israel war’s disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed global crude oil prices above $100 per barrel — feeding through to higher gantry prices at Dangote and imported petrol. The Naira exchange rate in the official market is holding at around ₦1,367/$ but the pressure is enormous. Households, logistics companies, and transport operators are all absorbing punishing cost increases with no relief mechanism in sight.

Fresh communal violence has broken out between the Chobo and Bachaman communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, with at least two people feared dead. The violence stems from a long-running land boundary dispute that has periodically flared into deadly confrontations. Security forces have been deployed and the Adamawa State Government is calling for calm. The incident adds to a pattern of intercommunal clashes in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region that authorities have struggled to contain. Residents in the affected area are reportedly fleeing their homes for safer locations.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested a former Lagos State councillor following a dramatic raid that recovered 40 kilograms of cannabis sativa (skunk). The story went hugely viral for one specific reason: the drugs were concealed inside baby diapers in a creative — and ultimately futile — bid to evade detection. The suspect was caught during a stop-and-search operation and is currently in NDLEA custody. The agency said investigations are ongoing. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa has been praised by commenters for the continued crackdown, though it’s the diaper detail that’s driving the story’s viral spread.

Iran’s process to announce a new Supreme Leader is underway, as the Middle East war entered a new phase. Nigeria is following this closely because the ongoing Strait of Hormuz closure is one of the key drivers of the global oil price surge that is inflating Nigeria’s petrol prices. Discussions on X are linking Iran’s political transition directly to Nigerian pump prices — a rare case of international geopolitics generating direct household-level conversation. Meanwhile, pro-Iran solidarity protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) continue to be staged in northern cities during the final days of Ramadan, with police maintaining a watchful presence. Iran’s incoming Supreme Leader is expected to determine whether to negotiate a ceasefire or continue military confrontation.

Nigerian military troops under Operation HADIN KAI successfully repelled an insurgent attack on a military base in Borno State on the same night as the Maiduguri market bombings, killing several militants in the process. While the military operation showed defensive capability, critics on social media are asking why the simultaneous suicide attack in Maiduguri city itself was not prevented — describing it as an apparent attempt by insurgents to “divide security forces with a decoy attack.” The military acknowledged there was an increased threat assessment for suicide bomb attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP during the closing days of Ramadan. Reuters reported that the outskirts attack was launched around midnight Sunday into Monday, suggesting a coordinated multi-front operation by insurgents.

Two stories generating quieter but sustained engagement: Nigeria has formally joined a global pact to regulate AI and data privacy, obligating the country to implement safeguards against AI-driven surveillance and unconsented data harvesting — a significant policy moment for Nigeria’s tech sector. Separately, Lagos hospital Euracare has issued a public defence of the doctors suspended after the death of the son of celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, insisting their clinical decisions met standard medical protocols. The case has reignited national debate about accountability in private healthcare and the rights of grieving families to seek justice. The Nigerian medical community is closely watching the fallout.

Nigeria’s currency is holding at approximately ₦1,367 to the dollar in the official market, offering a measure of stability even as global oil prices surge past $100/barrel due to the Iran-Israel war. The CBN’s interventions and the oil revenue windfall are providing some buffer — but the pressure on ordinary Nigerians remains intense given simultaneously rising fuel prices. On the political front, opposition parties including the PDP, Labour Party, and ADC are exploring a consensus strategy against the Electoral Act 2026’s mandatory direct primaries clause, which critics say would be prohibitively expensive for parties and favour the ruling APC with its vastly superior funding base. Political insiders say back-channel talks are ongoing.
