🚨 Breaking · Security
Three coordinated suspected suicide bomb attacks struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening — killing at least 23 people and wounding 108 others in one of the deadliest attacks the city has seen in years. The blasts, which occurred at approximately 7:24 pm, targeted three crowded locations: the popular Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover. Borno police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed the toll, saying preliminary investigations reveal the attacks were carried out by “suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices.” Borno governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attacks as “utterly condemnable, barbaric and inhumane.” President Tinubu, who had already departed for his UK state visit, directed security chiefs to immediately travel to Maiduguri to take charge of the situation.

🇬🇧 Diplomacy · International
President Bola Tinubu departed Abuja on Tuesday for a landmark state visit to the United Kingdom — the first by a Nigerian head of state in 37 years and the first ever by a democratically elected Nigerian president to be hosted at Windsor Castle. King Charles III and Queen Camilla will receive Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on March 18–19 with full ceremonial pomp. The visit includes bilateral talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, where multiple MoUs on trade, investment, defence and cultural cooperation will be signed — including a landmark £746 million UK Export Finance deal to refurbish the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos. Tinubu was seen off at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by Senate President Akpabio, FCT Minister Wike and other senior officials. Bilateral trade between the two countries currently stands at £8.1 billion ($11 billion) annually.

🗳 Politics · 2027
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his hometown in Agulu, Anambra State, formally launching his 2027 presidential campaign. Obi announced he will challenge the newly passed Electoral Act 2026 in court, alleging the law was “hurriedly churned out” to allow the ruling party to “snatch the 2027 presidential election and run away with it.” He accused INEC of overstepping its mandate, comparing its role to a referee trying to select team players. Obi declared the South-East is “working as a family” with other regions to build a united opposition: “The 2027 election will be Nigerians against bad leadership.”
04
⛽ Economy · Energy
Nigerians are voicing widespread frustration following yet another petrol price increase by the Dangote Refinery — the latest in a string of hikes driven by the Iran-Israel war’s devastating impact on global crude markets. Pump prices at filling stations have risen sharply, pushing up transport fares across Lagos, Abuja and other major cities. Global oil prices crossed $100 per barrel this week for the first time since the conflict began. The Naira meanwhile opened at ₦1,367 to the dollar in the official NFEM market, showing relative stability despite the fuel pressures, according to Vanguard’s market report for March 17.
05
🛢 Global Economy
Global oil prices have crossed the $100 per barrel mark as the Iran-Israel war continues with no end in sight and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed — the biggest disruption to global oil flows in decades. For Nigeria, which imports its refined petroleum despite being a major crude producer, the surge is a double-edged crisis: export revenues rise but fuel costs to ordinary Nigerians skyrocket. Nigerian economists and senators are warning the government to use the windfall strategically, while a senator described the price surge as a potential “opportunity for Nigeria” if managed well. Asian stocks fell as markets reacted to the escalating tensions.
06
⚔ Security · Crisis
Two people are feared dead following a renewed outbreak of communal violence between the Chobo and Bachaman communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, rooted in a protracted and unresolved land dispute. Security forces have been deployed to restore order as residents flee. The Adamawa State Government has called for restraint. The violence underscores the persistent threat of intercommunal conflicts across Nigeria’s middle belt, particularly in communities where land use disputes between farming and herding communities remain unresolved.
07
🌍 International · Iran War
Iran’s Assembly of Experts is preparing to announce a new Supreme Leader as the country continues to reel from the military campaign launched by US and Israeli forces in February 2026. The leadership transition carries major global implications, including for Nigeria. The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz — through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes — is directly fuelling Nigeria’s petrol price crisis. Nigeria’s Federal Government has warned of “potentially grave consequences for regional and global stability” and called for de-escalation. IMN Quds Day solidarity rallies have also spread to northern Nigerian cities including Kano and Bauchi.
08
🚔 Crime · NDLEA
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a former Lagos State councillor following the dramatic recovery of 40 kilograms of cannabis sativa (skunk) in a raid. In a detail that has gone viral on social media, investigators found the drugs ingeniously concealed inside diapers in an apparent bid to evade detection during a stop-and-search. The suspect is in NDLEA custody as investigations continue. The bust is part of NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa’s ongoing nationwide campaign against drug trafficking networks embedded in political and social structures.
09
💱 Economy · Forex
The Nigerian Naira has opened Monday trading with slight fluctuations but remains relatively stable against the US Dollar, with the official NFEM rate sitting at approximately ₦1,367 per dollar — a modest 0.37% depreciation from Sunday’s close, according to Vanguard’s early market report. The Central Bank of Nigeria continues to intervene to manage liquidity. The parallel market rate remains higher amid elevated demand driven by the global oil price surge and Nigeria’s petrol import costs. The comparative stability comes despite the Dangote petrol price hike and surging global oil prices above $100.
10
⚽ Sports · Achievement
A hat-trick of Nigerian sporting and civic achievements to end the bulletin: Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman delivered another fine performance as Atletico Madrid edged a Copa del Rey final rehearsal to maintain their strong form. Meanwhile, Benin City — capital of Edo State — has been awarded $1 million by Bloomberg Philanthropies for urban innovation excellence, as confirmed by the Edo Governor’s office. And in basketball, Nigeria celebrated the retirement of former D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke, with Blueprint reporting that the nation’s basketball community has paid tribute to her legendary service to Nigerian women’s basketball.
